IndianOil Overcomes Unstoppable Data Growth Business Threat

IndianOil, India’s national oil company and a top-100 Global 500 firm, faced exponential growth in its SAP ERP database (from 150GB in 2001 to 15TB by 2014) that strained cost, manageability, performance and scalability across nearly 700 locations. To address these issues, IndianOil engaged Hewlett Packard Enterprise and its HPE Datacenter Care service to plan and execute a Database Reorganisation and Compression (DRoC) program.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise reconfigured storage (using HPE XP P9500/XP24000/XP12000 arrays) and performed an online reorganisation and compression in under two months with minimal downtime. The project reduced the database by 62% (15TB to 5.6TB), cut overall SAP response time by one third (900ms to 600ms) and improved user response by 35% (460ms to 295ms), lowered peak front-end IOPs by 70% (40,000 to 12,000), reduced backup time by over 60% (8h to 3h), freed 72TB across three data centers (avoiding storage purchases for ~5 years), and delivered Rs 28.8 million one-time savings plus Rs 72,000 monthly recurring savings — all delivered by Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
