HPE StoreOnce Deduplication Reduces Cost of Large Scale Data Protection

Yahoo! Japan needed to overhaul backup and disaster recovery for its Oracle database platform that supports core services (Auctions, Shopping, Wallet) because growing data volumes were causing longer backup windows, network congestion and rising total cost of ownership. After evaluating multiple appliances, Yahoo! Japan selected Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s HPE StoreOnce System and the HPE StoreOnce Catalyst Plug‑in for Oracle RMAN to replace NAS‑based RMAN backups and reduce reliance on Oracle Data Guard for replication.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise implemented server‑side deduplication and StoreOnce replication, enabling direct RMAN writes to StoreOnce, reduced network transfer, and standardized operations. The deployment delivered measurable gains versus competing products: about 33% faster backups, roughly 60% faster recoveries, up to 2× transfer speed in tests, ~25% lower implementation and maintenance costs, and a reduction in effective backup capacity to around one‑sixth—stopping frequent Oracle Data Guard/NAS expansions and improving cross‑site data protection reliability.
