A Heroku Case Study
DrivenData is a social enterprise that crowdsources the global data science community to build solutions for social challenges, from conservation to public health. Faced with vast datasets (e.g., 300,000+ camera-trap clips) and a small engineering team, they needed a secure, managed infrastructure and a way to turn winning competition models into production tools without getting bogged down in DevOps.
By running their apps on Heroku and using Heroku Postgres and Redis, DrivenData quickly deployed Zamba Cloud—an open-source wildlife identification app born from a global competition (participants from 90+ countries) whose winning model identifies 23 animals in video data. The managed platform delivered security, faster feature rollout, and operational scale, letting the team focus on competitions and product improvements while expanding their social impact.
