A Heroku Case Study

Making the All-You-Can-Watch Movie Buffet a Reality on Heroku

MoviePass is a subscription service that lets members see a movie a day for a flat monthly fee, created to help reverse declining theater attendance. With a lean development team using multiple languages (Scala, Ruby on Rails, Java, Node.js), MoviePass found building and maintaining separate AWS environments too time-consuming and costly, which threatened to slow app development and inflate infrastructure overhead.

MoviePass moved to Heroku’s polyglot, managed platform so developers could deploy in their preferred languages from a single dashboard without managing infrastructure. Heroku now powers the website, API, payment and subscription systems, and the geo‑location mobile app for iPhone and Android—delivering about a 90% performance boost, a 40% reduction in service cost per user, and an architecture designed to scale well beyond one million users.
