IoT App on Heroku Orchestrates the Connected Home by Syncing Home Devices and Wearables

Yonomi is a mobile-first startup that simplifies the connected home by letting previously siloed devices and wearables work together through custom "Routines." The core challenge was orchestrating many incompatible IoT products without relying on a physical hub, while rapidly adding new device integrations and handling unpredictable traffic spikes as the user base and device ecosystem grew.

Yonomi built a cloud-centric solution on Heroku using Node.js microservices, with the mobile device acting as the local communications hub and a dedicated device-connection service that can scale independently by adjusting dynos. This approach minimized infrastructure management, enabled quick onboarding and routine automation, and allowed Yonomi to handle sudden demand (e.g., post-SXSW growth) smoothly—today supporting 60+ devices and accelerating new integrations.
