Heroku’s Managed Service Helps Kolide Do More with a Smaller Team

Kolide helps organizations secure employee devices by using the open-source osquery agent to monitor endpoints and a Slack app to nudge users to fix issues. After launching on Kubernetes, the team found the platform required heavy custom tooling, four full-time SREs out of a 16‑person engineering team, and rising hosting costs—diverting resources from product development and slowing new feature work.

Kolide moved to Heroku’s managed platform, running three Ruby on Rails apps on Dynos with Heroku Redis, Postgres, and Sidekiq to ingest and process device reports. The shift eliminated much of the operations overhead, cut monthly platform costs, removed the need for dedicated SREs, and enabled rapid scaling and faster time to market—processing nearly a billion jobs per month while freeing the team to focus on product improvements.
