As their user base and number of funnels grew, the company faced massive data volumes and traffic spikes that a bootstrapped team needed to handle reliably while remaining agile and able to iterate quickly on a monolithic Rails app.
ClickFunnels has run on Heroku since day one, using Heroku Redis and Apache Kafka alongside Amazon Aurora in a hybrid data architecture—Redis for backend queuing and Kafka as a buffer—to handle millions of messages per second and prevent data loss during spikes. With Heroku’s managed services and plans to adopt Private Spaces and region-specific apps, ClickFunnels has scaled to billions of monthly requests, kept operations simple for a small team, and focused on product growth and experimentation.
