Heroku App Helps Social Enterprises Measure What Matters

B Lab is a nonprofit that helps for‑profit companies measure and manage their social and environmental impact and run the B Corp certification program. Facing an outdated, hard‑to‑use online self‑assessment that frustrated users, B Lab set out to reimagine the user journey with a simpler, consumer‑grade interface so organizations could focus on the assessment rather than the tool.

They rebuilt the assessment on Heroku—using an Ember frontend, a Laravel API, Heroku Postgres and add‑ons—and integrated it with Salesforce via Heroku Connect to sync millions of rows of data. The result was a streamlined, interactive beta launched in March 2016, faster development through Heroku’s ecosystem, reduced custom sync code, and a clear roadmap to scale the platform and support B Lab’s growing global movement.
