Life.io, a Philadelphia-based startup, helps employers drive healthier behavior by converting biometric, lifestyle and behavioral data into a “LifeStyle Score” and cash incentives. The company needed a secure, cost-effective platform that could protect sensitive health data, avoid heavy DevOps overhead, and actually change long-term habits where many traditional wellness programs failed.
Life.io built its Ruby on Rails app on Heroku, using Heroku Postgres, TrueVault for HIPAA-safe storage, and add-ons like New Relic, Papertrail, Bugsnag, Redis To Go/Sidekiq and Dataclips to monitor, scale and iterate quickly. The lightweight front end and easy environment management sped development and testing; as a result, by mid‑2015 one in five employees engaged with the platform weekly and customers saw an average 3% weight loss, enabling rapid growth and market expansion.
