ClickMechanic Builds a Data-Driven Car Repair Marketplace on Heroku

ClickMechanic is a UK marketplace that matches car owners with vetted mechanics, but faced a hard technical challenge: generating accurate, real-time repair quotes across tens of thousands of vehicle and parts/labor permutations while operating as a lean team that needed to avoid heavy DevOps overhead and handle predictable demand spikes.

By building on Heroku’s managed platform, ClickMechanic combined industry data in AWS RDS with Heroku Postgres, ran scheduled ML jobs to produce pricing models, used a read-only follower for analytics, and offloaded background work to worker dynos. Heroku add-ons (New Relic, Papertrail, MemCachier, Bonsai) plus GitHub Review Apps sped QA and daily deployments—resulting in reliable real-time quotes, easy scaling during peaks, reduced operational effort, and the agility to move toward a microservices architecture.
