A Heroku Case Study
Citrix wanted to broaden its conferencing portfolio with a lightweight, low-friction web meeting tool that anyone could use instantly for quick ad hoc discussions—no downloads, sign-ups, or licenses required. A small Copenhagen team was formed to operate like a start-up and needed the agility to develop, iterate and scale rapidly while keeping the experience simple and accessible for casual users and as a complement to GoToMeeting Pro.
The team built GoToMeeting Free with a Node.js API, JavaScript/AngularJS front end and a peer-to-peer “signaling” layer, hosting production and staging on Heroku for daily deployments and effortless scaling; audio/video runs on Amazon Cloud and Firebase handles real-time sync, with New Relic and Logentries for monitoring. The result is a streamlined, no‑signup web app for quick three‑person meetings that launches quickly, scales with demand, integrates with popular tools, and lets the team focus on user experience rather than infrastructure.
