How one school uses positive behavior reinforcement to decrease tardies by 86%

Aspira Early College High School in Chicago, led by Dean of Students Francisco Torres, faced severe budget and safety pressures common in the district and needed to reduce chronic discipline problems like tardiness. To support a schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) approach, Aspira adopted Hero K12’s platform for points-based reinforcement and objective tardy tracking.

Using Hero K12, staff scan student IDs to award points for behaviors such as arriving early, class participation, and homework completion; points are redeemed at a CHAMPS store and for school-specific perks. The solution made consequences objective and scalable and drove wide participation—tardiness fell 86%, total minor disciplinary issues dropped 70%, and out-of-school suspensions declined about 86% (from roughly 700 to 100).
