Mercedes-Benz deploys HERE HD Live Map for DRIVE PILOT system

Mercedes-Benz sought to deploy the first commercially available SAE Level 3 automated driving system, DRIVE PILOT, which required ultra-precise and real-time road data to operate safely under certain conditions on German motorways. To achieve this, they partnered with HERE Technologies to integrate the HERE HD Live Map as a core component of the new system. The map provides the vehicle with critical information about the road network, going well beyond standard GPS to allow the car to effectively "see around corners."

HERE Technologies provided its cloud-based HD Live Map, which delivers detailed layers of data on road geometry, traffic signs, and real-time events. This solution, combined with the vehicle's sensors, enables the DRIVE PILOT system to control speed, distance, and lane positioning without driver intervention. As a result, Mercedes-Benz became the first automaker to bring a Level 3 system to market, initially launching it in the new S-Class to give drivers time back and a luxurious experience in heavy traffic on suitable German motorways at speeds up to 60 km/h.
