Reducing HAC Rates to Keep Kids Safe and Healthy

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, a nationally ranked pediatric health system, faced persistent hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) — including CLABSIs, pressure ulcers, and VTEs — that harmed patients, lengthened stays, and drove up costs. To gain timely, actionable data and support organization-wide improvement, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin partnered with Health Catalyst and adopted the Health Catalyst® Analytics Platform (Late‑Binding™ Data Warehouse architecture) along with clinical analytics and decision‑support applications and installation services.

Health Catalyst implemented an enterprise data warehouse and customized HAC analytics apps, automating near‑real‑time reporting, enabling frontline teams, and providing training and governance support. As a result, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin achieved a 30% reduction in overall HACs ($1.6M savings to date), a 23% drop in CLABSIs, a 74% reduction in pressure ulcers, a 68% reduction in VTEs, and 22 fewer patients harmed year‑over‑year.
