Patient-Centered LOS Reduction Initiative Improves Outcomes, Lowers Costs

El Camino Hospital, a 395-bed community hospital in Mountain View, Calif., faced rising costs and patient-safety risks tied to prolonged hospital length of stay (LOS) but lacked timely, actionable data and a coordinated, multi-disciplinary discharge process. To address these challenges the hospital partnered with Health Catalyst and deployed the Health Catalyst Analytics Platform (Late-Binding™ Data Warehouse Architecture) and associated installation services to get accurate, real-time analytics and support operational change.

Health Catalyst implemented an enterprise data warehouse and analytics applications that enabled a new “days stayed” view, targeted identification of high-risk patients, virtual SNF tracking, and supported expanded care-coordination resources and daily multidisciplinary rounds. The initiative produced measurable impact: a 7.8% reduction in average LOS (from 5.24 to 4.83 days), 14.8% fewer readmissions, a 55% reduction in hospital-acquired conditions, a 32% drop in AHRQ PSIs, and $2.2 million in projected annual cost savings.
