MultiCare Health System, a Tacoma, Washington–based health system, was facing elevated septicemia mortality rates—with multiple hospitals performing below national averages. To tackle this, MultiCare partnered with Health Catalyst and deployed Health Catalyst’s Adaptive Data Warehouse along with clinical and process improvement services to enable a data-driven, systemwide improvement effort supported by executive leadership.

Health Catalyst consolidated clinical, IT, and financial data into a single source of truth, helped refine a sepsis cohort algorithm, and supported a Critical Care Collaborative that standardized a severe sepsis order set, implemented a Modified Early Warning System (MEWS) dashboard for early detection, and launched a rapid "code sepsis" response. As a result, MultiCare Health System reduced septicemia mortality by 22% and realized $1.3M in validated cost savings over 12 months, with improvements poised to expand to other clinical areas.
