Improving Clinical Processes and Effectiveness of Care through Creation of a Disease-Specific Registry

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP), working with OSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute, faced challenges monitoring Multiple Sclerosis (MS) progression because critical data lived in unstructured EHR notes, key dates and medication histories were often missing or ambiguous, and manual chart review was time-consuming. To address this, they partnered with Health Catalyst and used the Health Catalyst® Analytics Platform—including the Late-Binding™ Data Warehouse—and the Instant Data Entry Application (IDEA)™ to create a disease-specific registry.

Using the Health Catalyst platform and a customized IDEA flowsheet registry that integrates EHR and manually entered data, clinicians gained a single, timely view of MS history and treatment. Health Catalyst’s solution led to a 20.9‑minute per‑patient reduction in physician time spent searching for data, a 2.2‑minute per‑patient reduction for support staff, a 300% increase in investigator‑initiated studies, faster prior authorization and trial pre‑screening, and peer‑reviewed publications demonstrating the registry’s impact.
