Preview of the Teesside University Case Study

Teesside University advances prosthetic socket fitting with HeadChannel, using 7-strip, 20-sensel real-time sensor data at 10 Hz

Teesside University, alongside healthcare and industry partners, faced the significant challenge of improving the painful and time-consuming process of fitting prosthetic sockets for amputees. The existing method often resulted in ill-fitting devices that caused skin lesions and discomfort, leading many patients to reject their prosthetics entirely. To address this, the university collaborated with vendor HeadChannel to develop an innovative software solution as part of the broader QuickFit initiative.

HeadChannel developed a Control Software Package (CSP) that integrated 3D reconstruction, sensor data collection from new QTSS™ sensors, and biomechanical algorithms to streamline the socket design process. The solution allowed prosthetists to visualize pressure points in real-time and generate precise, 3D-printed sockets efficiently. This innovation significantly reduced fitting time from weeks to days and improved patient comfort. HeadChannel's software enhanced the entire prosthetic supply chain, with the potential for future use in UK hospitals and beyond.
