A HCSS Case Study
J.F. Brennan is a La Crosse, Wis.–based marine construction and environmental remediation firm with about 400 employees and job sites in all 50 states. Because its crews are widely dispersed and regulated by multiple agencies (EPA, OSHA, MSHA, Army Corps, etc.), the company struggled with delayed paper-based safety observations, time-consuming manual spreadsheet tracking, and fragmented training and certification records.
J.F. Brennan adopted HCSS Safety’s web and mobile system to centralize observations, photos, inspections, toolbox talks, and skills/certification tracking; foremen submit 70–80 observations weekly and the system holds roughly 1,500 certifications with automated renewal alerts. The result: a stronger, more consistent safety program, streamlined training and documentation, a reduced Experience Modification Rate (0.61) that lowered workers’ comp costs, and improved ability to showcase safety performance when pursuing larger contracts.
