A HCSS Case Study
J.F. Brennan is a marine construction, environmental remediation, and harbor services company with about 400 employees working on projects in all 50 states. Its long‑standing safety program relied on voluntary, paper‑based field observations that were often submitted days or weeks late, making it difficult to act quickly, aggregate learnings for weekly company‑wide safety meetings, or maintain consistent records across many small, dispersed crews.
The company implemented HCSS Safety’s mobile Safety Observations, enabling real‑time, photo‑enabled submissions from the field and centralized storage of all reports. The change improved submission quality, saved field crews and administrative staff hours each week, produced roughly 70–80 observations weekly (reducing reliance on near‑miss reports), and allowed faster corrective action and easier retrieval of job records. As a result J.F. Brennan lowered its Experience Modification Rate to 0.61, reducing indirect insurance costs and strengthening its competitive bidding position.
