A HBM / HBK Case Study
The Swedish Transport Administration, Trafikverket, faced a complex challenge during the excavation of the Korsvägen underground station for the West Link project. The geological conditions were exceptionally difficult, with shallow tunnels in hard, highly stressed bedrock, making drill and blast excavation unpredictable. Trafikverket needed to carefully monitor and control the load transfer from the rock mass to the new structural supports to ensure safety during construction. To address this, they partnered with vendor HBK for a sophisticated monitoring solution.
HBK implemented an integrated, real-time monitoring system using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors to measure strain and temperature, supported by other instruments. This solution provided continuous, decision-ready data that enabled safe excavation progress, early detection of deviations, and confident verification of structural performance. The HBK system strengthened risk management during construction by turning raw measurements into actionable engineering insights and also established a foundation for the station's long-term structural health monitoring.
