Case Study: HUK-COBURG (Germany's largest motor vehicle insurer) achieves 10x faster telematics and 24/7 availability with Hazelcast

A Hazelcast Case Study

Preview of the HUK-COBURG Case Study

Serving a Rapidly Growing Consumer Base on Web and Mobile

HUK-COBURG, Germany's largest motor vehicle insurer with about 12 million customers, faced a digital-transformation challenge: telematics data used for premium calculations had costly, latency-prone paths to the mainframe and occasional unavailability, and their existing per-service in-memory solution could not be deployed as a centralized cache. To scale the new pricing program and ensure 24x7 reliability, they evaluated caching frameworks and selected Hazelcast (Hazelcast IMDG) to meet performance and resiliency needs.

Hazelcast was deployed as a centralized in-memory cache, eliminating slow network accesses to the mainframe and providing high availability for continuous operation. The Hazelcast implementation cut telematics retrieval from ~500 ms to under 50 ms (about a 10x improvement), has run for over a year with zero downtime, and was expanded to seven projects (including mobile apps and Meine Gesundheit), improving throughput, reliability, and customer experience.
