Ensuring Meaningful Scientific Research Data from Space

Airbus needed a reliable, low-latency ground-segment solution to ensure meaningful scientific data from the FLUMIAS confocal microscope on TEXUS sounding rockets, where multiple science teams must make real‑time adjustments (focus, field of view, laser intensity) during short microgravity flights. Airbus selected Hazelcast’s in-memory computing platform for its simple programming model, cross‑platform support (Java/.NET), small hardware footprint and strong documentation to integrate a lightweight, easy‑to‑use data management layer into the ground systems.

Hazelcast was deployed as the exclusive communication backbone for the FLUMIAS ground segment, providing five core services—distribution of microscope images, processed telemetry, experiment settings/commands, health/status data, and experiment configuration—and was used successfully in both TEXUS missions carrying FLUMIAS. By enabling real‑time switching between three scientist teams, live experiment adjustments during flight, and improved situational awareness for engineers, Hazelcast directly contributed to in‑flight image quality and reliable delivery of scientifically valuable data.
