Case Study: Swedbank achieves faster, more reliable mobile banking with Hazelcast

A Hazelcast Case Study

Accelerating Mobile Apps with In-Memory Technologies

Swedbank, a large Stockholm-based banking group serving over 7 million private customers (about 5 million digitally active), needed a fast, scalable and secure backend data layer to support Internet and mobile banking. Their Tech Stream team found traditional RDBMS setups imposed heavy schema overhead, created a single point of failure and could not meet the latency and agility requirements for modern mobile apps — so they evaluated in-memory options and selected Hazelcast (Hazelcast IMDG / Hazelcast IMDG Enterprise).

Swedbank implemented Hazelcast as a distributed in-memory data store and cache (first integrating an app in just a few hours), using Hazelcast IMDG Enterprise features such as WAN Replication, backups and enterprise security to create multi-cluster, cross–data-center failover for SSO tokens, open-banking token caches and caching for other teams. The Hazelcast deployment eliminated the RDBMS bottleneck, decreased latency, removed the single point of failure, has run without Hazelcast-related issues for two years, and enabled Swedbank’s teams to self-manage and rapidly roll out additional use cases.
