Terraform for On-Premises and Hybrid Cloud at Wayfair

Wayfair, a large retailer operating three private data centers in Seattle, Boston, and Dublin, needed a way to elastically scale its on-premises infrastructure for spikes like Cyber Monday. Using HashiCorp Terraform, the team set out to modernize their infrastructure management so it could work more like a hybrid cloud environment and speed up provisioning from request to production.

HashiCorp helped Wayfair build Terraform plugins and modules that automated server provisioning through Git pull requests, Jenkins, and RESTful APIs. The results were significant: on-prem server provisioning time dropped from an average of 49 days and 13 tickets per workflow, and Wayfair also open-sourced the solution as “Project Argo.”
