Terraform abstractions for safety and power at Segment

Segment, a high-scale analytics platform running hundreds of services on AWS and ECS, needed a safer way to manage rapid infrastructure changes without risking outages or accidental deletions. With HashiCorp Terraform, the team sought to balance speed, reliability, and control while coordinating dozens of developers and thousands of AWS resources.

HashiCorp helped Segment implement a safer Terraform workflow by using remote state, separate AWS accounts and states by environment/team, and reusable modules with strong defaults and documented inputs/outputs. Segment also used Terraform to standardize alerting, cost tagging, and other infrastructure patterns, reducing manual work and blast radius while enabling 30–50 infrastructure changes per day across tens of thousands of resources.
