Nomad and Vault at CircleCI Security and Scheduling are Not Your Core Competencies

CircleCI needed a better way to handle security and workload scheduling as its CI platform grew from a small startup into a service processing tens of millions of jobs per month. Instead of continuing to build these capabilities in-house, CircleCI looked for tools that could support its core mission of running customer jobs reliably and securely.

HashiCorp provided Nomad for job scheduling and Vault for secrets management. CircleCI adopted Nomad at the core of its platform, using it to improve scheduling efficiency and resilience, and made a small patch so jobs drain and complete properly during scale-down events. The result was a more scalable, lower-complexity system that helped CircleCI recover cleanly from incidents and continue expanding with less operational overhead.
