Modular Infrastructure Deployments at New Relic with Terraform

New Relic, a monitoring company focused on application performance and infrastructure management, needed to build and launch a new infrastructure product quickly while keeping the environment clean, easy to maintain, and easy to audit. To meet that challenge, the team adopted HashiCorp Terraform to create infrastructure as code for AWS-based deployments.

With HashiCorp Terraform, New Relic built a modular deployment approach for its environments, including Mesos, Cassandra, and Elasticsearch, and used GitHub Enterprise to store code and state files, review terraform plan output, and control changes through pull requests and approvals. The result was a more maintainable, reusable, and auditable infrastructure process with reduced blast radius, faster recovery from mistakes, and the ability to safely destroy and recreate environments when needed.
