Case Study: Jet.com achieves higher utilization and self-service deployment with HashiCorp Nomad

A HashiCorp Case Study

How Jet.com uses HashiCorp Nomad on Azure to run its applications

Jet.com, an e-commerce company and later a Walmart subsidiary, needed a better way to schedule workloads in Microsoft Azure as it looked to improve utilization, reduce costs, and support both Windows and Linux services. After evaluating several options, Jet.com chose HashiCorp Nomad because it was cross-platform, flexible enough to run containerized and non-containerized workloads, easy to adopt given its existing experience with Consul, and integrated well with Consul and Vault.

HashiCorp helped Jet.com build a self-service platform around Nomad, using an internal tool called Gizmo so developers could define service and deployment manifests in version control while the platform handled deployment, scaling, health checks, geo-redundancy, PagerDuty integration, and canary releases. The result was stronger continuous delivery, easier experimentation, and more operational control, with Jet.com reporting that it had already migrated its front end to Nomad, phased 50% of traffic to it, and expected to scale the Nomad environment to nearly 400 nodes before the holidays.
