How Datadog scales support test environments with Vagrant and Terraform

Datadog, a monitoring and observability company, faced a growing scalability challenge on its solutions team as it handled support for 200+ integrations across thousands of customer stack combinations. Building local test environments to reproduce issues was slow, manual, and often duplicated across engineers, making it harder to investigate tickets quickly and consistently.

Using HashiCorp Vagrant and Terraform, Datadog created a standardized “sandbox” workflow for building and sharing test environments. Vagrant automated local provisioning, while Terraform extended the same setup into AWS EC2 for scalable, shareable cloud environments. The result was faster environment creation, easier reuse of teammates’ work, and better support efficiency, with test setups reportedly ready in about 5 to 10 minutes.
