A HashiCorp Case Study
GitHub, the world’s largest developer collaboration platform, needed a more efficient way to scale backend infrastructure, manage secrets, and coordinate service discovery across thousands of nodes and multiple cloud environments. Its homegrown systems for load balancing and secrets management were highly manual, required extensive custom coding, and created friction for developers and operations teams. GitHub turned to HashiCorp, using Terraform, Consul, and Vault to support a growing global user base and simplify infrastructure operations.
With HashiCorp Terraform, Consul, and Vault, GitHub automated infrastructure provisioning, service discovery, and secrets management across AWS, Azure, and on-premises environments. The results were significant: load balancing configuration time dropped from 30 minutes to under 1 minute, onboarding and training costs fell, and prototyping new services went from several days to less than an hour. HashiCorp also helped GitHub improve security and compliance while standardizing on scalable, multi-cloud open source tools.
