Case Study: eFishery achieves reliable edge IoT deployment with HashiCorp Nomad, Consul, and Vault

A HashiCorp Case Study

Preview of the eFishery Case Study

Edge architecture of eFishery, an aquaculture IoT management startup that uses HashiCorp Nomad, Consul, and Vault

eFishery is an aquaculture IoT startup in Indonesia that helps fish farmers automate feeding and monitor pond conditions. As its feeder devices were deployed in rural areas with unreliable internet access, the company needed a better way to move data from edge devices to the cloud without waiting one to three days for manual syncs. HashiCorp Nomad, Consul, and Vault were chosen to support this edge-first architecture.

With HashiCorp Nomad and Consul, eFishery deployed and managed edge services on Raspberry Pi–based servers, keeping MQTT and offline-first services running locally and syncing data when connectivity returned. Vault was used to manage deployment and application secrets without plain text. The result was a scalable edge deployment running more than 200 deployments a day, over 500 Nomad jobs, 900 running containers, and about 80 TB of data transfer per month, while improving deployment speed, failover, and MTTR.
