Case Study: Defra UK achieves real-time forest climate monitoring with HARDWARIO CHESTER NB-IoT

A HARDWARIO Case Study

Preview of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Case Study

Thanks to HARDWARIO we have data to immediately study the impact of climate change

Forest Research, the research agency of the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), faced a challenge in manually collecting environmental data from its forests. Their existing process was expensive and limited to locations with a power supply, preventing them from effectively studying the impact of climate change on tree growth. They partnered with HARDWARIO to find a solution for regular, remote data collection.

HARDWARIO implemented its CHESTER NB-IoT device equipped with environmental sensors and a dendrometer. This battery-powered solution transmits data on temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and trunk growth via Vodafone's network to an online dashboard. As a result, Defra and Forest Research now receive continuous, high-quality data from remote locations in near real-time, enabling them to immediately study climate change impacts and significantly reduce the need for manual site visits.
