Building a Service Mesh at Microsoft Yammer with the power of HAProxy Enterprise

Yammer, Microsoft’s enterprise social networking service, needed to move from legacy data centers to Microsoft Azure while improving resilience, developer velocity, and security. To replace hardware load balancers and secure east–west communication, the Yammer team chose HAProxy and specifically deployed HAProxy Enterprise as their Layer 7 solution to meet scalability, SSL enforcement, and service-discovery requirements.

Yammer built a containerized platform (Mesos/Marathon) with an instance of HAProxy Enterprise next to each app to form a large-scale service mesh, providing health checks, SSL termination, DNS-based discovery and observability. The HAProxy deployment now runs about 60,000 HAProxy Enterprise instances and handles roughly 2,000,000 requests per second, delivering greater reliability, faster automation, and cost-effective scalability while significantly improving developer productivity.
