A Happiest Minds Case Study
Happiest Minds partnered with a customer to build an NPU/ASIC-based packet broker to meet a demanding real-time network monitoring brief. The challenge was to deliver line-rate visibility with features such as traffic filtering, LAG, load balancing, port-based flow mapping, packet slicing and multiple management interfaces, while offering both NPU-based flexibility for telecom use cases and an ASIC option for cost-sensitive markets.
The team delivered a core forwarding engine with line-rate packet filtering/classification, an efficient packet reassembly engine, and converted legacy SNMP control into an SDN application with a management suite (CLI, SNMP, WebUI, XML-RPC, NETCONF) using Tail-f Confd. Built on Cavium Octeon II NPU and Broadcom ASIC platforms, the solution enabled line-rate monitoring for all packet sizes including fragmented traffic, added telecom capabilities like GTP correlation, and offloaded advanced processing so monitoring devices could be simpler—opening both telecom and cost-sensitive market segments.
