Case Study: Xcel Energy launches a smart grid billing pilot with Hansen Technologies

Xcel Energy, a U.S. utility with more than 5 million electricity and gas customers across eight states, needed a way to support its “Smart Grid City” pilot in Boulder, Colorado. Using Hansen Technologies’ Peaceplus customer care and billing software, the company set out to bill interval-metered residential and small business customers with time-of-use rates and critical pricing events while exploring smart-grid technologies and customer preferences.

Hansen Technologies implemented PeaceCX to aggregate and bill usage based on usage type and time of day, enabling standardized 15-minute interval readings and support for Saver Switch devices. The solution helped Xcel Energy grow interval-read smart meters from 16,000 to 23,000 during the pilot, while also allowing customers to receive discounts or rebates tied to energy usage and demand-response programs.
