Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg’s Animationsinstitut needed a higher-performance storage platform to support growing file sizes, parallel read/write demands, and high-IOPS workloads for students and faculty across a distributed campus. The school also wanted to move sporadic rendering workloads from its on-premises server room to the cloud and integrate its internal workflow management system with Hammerspace via API to automate IT resource allocation and project workflows.

Hammerspace provided a 1.5 petabyte data platform built on NVMe tier-1 and HDD tier-2 storage, with data orchestration policies to automate data protection and tiering across the environment. Hammerspace also assimilated the institute’s existing scale-out NAS so it could be reused for additional capacity, helped enable workflow automation through custom metadata tags, and positioned the school for future cloud bursting. The result was improved performance, extended life for existing storage hardware, and cost and sustainability benefits by using off-the-shelf systems instead of buying new infrastructure.
