A HALO Recognition Case Study
North Shore-LIJ Health System, through Staten Island University Hospital, needed to improve patient transport performance in its Radiology department while also boosting morale and creating a more positive team culture. Transport staff were averaging 2.2 patient moves per hour, just below the 2.26 moves-per-hour benchmark needed to reach 50% efficiency. HALO Recognition supported the effort with its GEM achievement-based recognition program, also referred to in the case study as the Go the Extra Mile platform.
With HALO Recognition’s GEM program, staff began nominating coworkers for certificates when they demonstrated helpful behaviors, and monthly top performers received points redeemable for gifts. The program helped unify the team around a clear goal, increased communication, and created a “Wall of Fame” recognition culture that spread beyond the department. As a result, transport performance rose from 2.2 to 2.8 moves per hour, surpassing the 2.26 benchmark, while other hospital managers began looking to HALO Recognition’s approach for their own departments.
