South Dakota Public Broadcasting and the State Legislature Automate Open Meeting Streaming with Haivision

South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB) needed to increase public access to State Legislature sessions and other government meetings to meet South Dakota’s Open Meetings Law. They required a secure, easy-to-operate solution to stream live and on‑demand video from any location (including public spaces), guarantee local backups in case of network failure, automate publishing and archiving, and satisfy government IT requirements. SDPB selected Haivision, deploying Makito X encoders with Storage, Haivision’s KB cloud transcoder, and the Haivision Video Cloud.

Haivision implemented an end‑to‑end workflow using Makito X with integrated storage and SRT for resilient public‑internet streaming, KB transcoding, and the Haivision Video Cloud Scheduler to automate publishing. The deployment enabled local backup recording, mobile broadcasting, and simplified workflows that doubled published content with the same staff. SDPB expanded coverage (ten additional rooms outside the state, two portable systems with three more planned) and reached 60,000 viewers with 80,000 hours watched.
