Riot Games Solves Remote Production Contribution over IP for League of Legends Invitational Broadcast

Riot Games needed to scale live production for the 2018 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational in Paris while centralizing broadcast operations in their Los Angeles REMI studio. Facing up to 34 simultaneous player and camera feeds in 1080p60 over ~6,000 miles, Riot wanted low-latency, frame-accurate A/V sync and to leverage its global WAN/PoP infrastructure to cut contribution bandwidth from a 10 Gbps model toward 1 Gbps. Riot Games selected Haivision to address these requirements.

Haivision supplied Makito X encoders and decoders with Stream Sync to ingest and keep streams synchronized within one frame, enabling sub-500 ms latency for remote production. Using Haivision’s solution, Riot streamed dozens of sources (24 cameras in production) at under 1 Gbps total, eliminated the need for OB vans and satellite links, reliably delivered the MSI finals to over 60 million viewers, and significantly reduced operational costs while improving production flexibility.
