Case Study: NBC Olympics achieves low-latency remote production and multiview venue monitoring with Haivision Makito X encoders

A Haivision Case Study

Preview of the NBC Case Study

NBC Relies on Haivision Encoders for Remote Production at Olympics

NBC faced the challenge of remotely producing the Rio Olympics from its newly launched Sports Production Operations Center (SPOC) in Stamford, CT, coordinating feeds from dozens of venues while minimizing bandwidth and cost. To support return-monitoring, commentator program feeds, and near-real-time multiviews back to Stamford, NBC deployed Haivision Makito X H.264 encoders and decoders as part of its remote production workflow.

Haivision delivered secure, low-latency HD video over NBC’s venue networks at extremely low bitrates, integrated into a backbone of four 10-Gig fiber pipes (plus a 45‑Mbps satellite backup) that carried more than 130 HD paths from Rio. The Haivision units enabled near-real-time multiview returns and program feeds to commentators, reduced reliance on costly circuits, and supported dozens of bi-directional paths and online streaming workflows across NBC’s production network.
