How BRIC TV Used Low Latency Video Streaming to Bring a Community Together and Celebrate Brooklyn Around the World

BRIC TV, the nonprofit community channel of Brooklyn arts organization BRIC, needed to transform its in-person Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival into a virtual event when COVID-19 made gatherings unsafe. To maintain broadcast-quality live concerts while minimizing in-studio personnel, BRIC TV turned to Haivision for a low-latency remote production solution, using Makito X video encoders/decoders and the open-source SRT streaming protocol.

Haivision implemented a remote production over IP workflow—Makito X encoders sent SRT streams to the production partner, cloud-based vMix was used for final mixing, and a Makito X decoder distributed the show to six linear channels as well as OTT and social platforms, with dual-ISP redundancy. The result was seamless, high-quality streaming with round-trip latency under 1.5 seconds, broad multi-channel reach, excellent attendance, and the ability to keep studio headcount minimal while delivering the festival to audiences safely.
