Crowdsourcing digital solutions for affordable healthcare through hackathons

GE Healthcare sought to accelerate affordable healthcare in rural India by crowdsourcing digital solutions for ICU monitoring, clinician training at primary health centers, and contextual maternal‑care protocols. To tap the developer community, GE Healthcare partnered with HackerEarth to run an online idea submission and an offline hackathon focused on Video Content Analytics (VCA), contextual training platforms, and contextual care protocols.

HackerEarth ran the program that attracted 632 participants across 371 teams, shortlisted 55 teams, and produced 37 apps and prototypes, with three winning projects (VCA emotion/detection, a clinician decision‑tree mobile app integrating protocols and records, and a vision‑based patient‑monitoring system). The winners received a $6,000 prize, worked with GE Healthcare to build functional prototypes at the April 2017 Grand Finale, and GE plans to deploy the solutions as part of its affordable healthcare technology.
