How Bon Secours Mercy Health is confronting the nursing shortage with tuition-free education

Bon Secours Mercy Health, one of the nation’s largest health systems, was confronting a severe nursing and frontline clinical staffing shortage and rising turnover. To attract, retain, and develop clinical talent, BSMH partnered with Guild Education in 2021 to launch a tuition-free education, skilling, and internal mobility benefit targeted at frontline and allied health roles.

Guild Education delivered a mapped program of 180+ certificates and degrees, coaching, and internal-mobility support aligned to priority roles (e.g., medical assistant, RN pathways). In the first eight months, more than 9,400 employees (~20% of eligible staff) registered interest, 52% of surveyed hires cited the benefit as a reason to join, and those who completed a Guild profile experienced 71% lower turnover—demonstrating measurable impact on attraction and retention.
