Vattenfall Safety Analysis Testing in Simulators

Vattenfall, working through Ringhals Power Station, needed a better way to test safety analysis methods for its nuclear plant simulator without depending only on engineering judgment. GSE Solutions supported the effort by using probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) results to help evaluate simulator scenarios and malfunctions.

GSE Solutions developed an approach that translated PSA minimum cut sets into simulator malfunctions and scenarios that could then be tested with best estimate codes to verify the physical consequences. The result was a more evidence-based method for safety analysis testing in simulators, improving confidence in the predicted outcomes, though no specific numeric performance gains were provided.
