Utility Saves ~$300K in Fuel Costs Annually by Using Cycle Isolation Monitoring Software

Santee Cooper, a coal-fired utility, was already tracking cycle isolation issues through walkdowns and temperature measurements, but it lacked a way to estimate the true impact of leaking valves. That made it difficult to prioritize maintenance work and led to less effective use of limited resources. GSE Solutions addressed this with its GSE TrueNorth TSM Enterprise CIM software.

Using TSM Enterprise CIM at Cross Unit 1, GSE Solutions helped Santee Cooper estimate leakage flows and heatrate impact, automatically rank leaking valves by cost impact, and support repair decisions with tracking and trending tools. The utility identified, prioritized, and repaired several leaking drain valves worth about 147 Btu/kW-hr, delivering more than $300,000 in annual fuel savings, and later rolled out the tool to the remaining Cross Station units with similar results.
