Thermal Performance Training Used to Isolate Problems Avoiding Plant Shutdown

South Texas Project, a 2700 MWe nuclear generating station, faced a high pressure feed water heater drain valve problem that raised concerns about a possible tube leak. GSE Solutions, through its GSE TrueNorth thermal performance analysis training, helped the plant’s Engineering Rapid Response Team investigate the issue and quickly determine whether the alarm pointed to a true equipment failure.

Using GSE Solutions’ training and computer trend analysis, the team identified a cracked pneumatic line between the controller and the valve, not a tube leak. The valve was restored to full service by the next morning, helping South Texas Project avoid a costly plant shutdown and resolve the issue in about thirty minutes.
