Thermal Performance Analysis Helps Utility Gain an Estimated $3M in Additional Revenue

Nevada Energy faced a serious generation shortfall at Reid Gardner Unit 4, a coal-fired plant that was producing 24.7 MWe less than rated capacity and losing nearly $500,000 per peak month. To determine whether the problem came from the turbine and justify an outage extension, Nevada Energy brought in GSE Solutions and its GSE TrueNorth thermal performance analysis service.

GSE Solutions analyzed several years of plant data and narrowed the issue to deposits on the high-pressure turbine, packing leakage, and degradation of the intermediate-pressure turbine. The plant then inspected and repaired the turbines, confirming the findings and completing needed maintenance. As a result, Nevada Energy expected generation to return to normal and projected more than $3 million in additional revenue over the next year.
