Hong Kong University Utilizing GPWR for Nuclear Energy Education and Research

City University of Hong Kong set out to build a nuclear and risk engineering education and research program, with a strong emphasis on nuclear power plant safety and emergency response training. To support that goal, the university needed a realistic, hands-on simulation environment for students and faculty, and it worked with GSE Solutions, using its GPWR Generic Pressurized Water Reactor Simulator along with related visualization tools.

GSE Solutions implemented a high-fidelity Nuclear Reactor Simulator Laboratory centered on the GPWR simulator, plus the VPanel Glass-Top Virtual Control Room Panel and Activ3Di Virtual GlassPWR Trainer. The solution gives students a realistic way to practice plant operations and helps faculty conduct research in the same software environment, while also improving public understanding of nuclear safety through visualization. The case study does not provide numerical performance metrics, but it highlights the laboratory as the centerpiece of the university’s new program.
