University of Western Australia boosts student participation to 88-92% with GroupMap

The University of Western Australia's Department of Architecture, led by Sophie Giles, sought to move from a traditional lecture format to a more collaborative, student-centric learning model. The challenge was to increase student engagement and encourage the co-creation of content, moving away from the instructor simply broadcasting information. To achieve this, they implemented GroupMap's online collaborative brainstorming and mind mapping platform.

Using GroupMap, students were able to collaboratively contribute ideas, images, and resources to shared mind maps following site visits. The solution allowed the instructor to easily moderate content and track participation. The results were highly successful, with 88-92% of students actively contributing over a three-year period involving 300 students. GroupMap enabled a 5x to 10x increase in content generation compared to the instructor-led approach, significantly deepening student learning and knowledge retention.
